The Update – 30 Religious Holidays in 60 Seconds

Welcome to the Update. I’m Adam, and this
is Rachel, and we’re part of the Better Together support team at Interfaith Youth Core. So
there are a lot of religious holidays out there, and if you want to be respectful of
people’s observances, this could be a problem as you plan your meetings and events on campus.
To help you wrap your head around all of the religious and secular holidays you need to
plan around, Adam and I have decided to take on a little bit of a challenge. The disembodied
voice of Vanessa is going to explain what’s up as we prepare. So here’s the deal: Adam
and Rachel are going to have to give you the name, date and sort of description of 30 different
holidays in just 60 seconds. Say what?! I’ll watch the clock and keep these two focused,
and oh, FYI: in the need for speed, please understand when pronunciations and descriptions
get a little bit iffy. 3, 2, 1, go! Oh! What is it?! 1:06!
Aaah! No! Okay, let’s be real for a moment. This was just a small sample of all the religious
and secular holidays that are out there, and along with these holidays comes various restrictions
on what people can and can’t do. Including not attend your event–that’s why it’s important
for you to know as an interfaith leader who is celebrating what and how. If you don’t,
it’s possible you’ll plan an event that’s really great–you’re super excited, and then
a large percentage of the population simply can’t attend because their religion says that
they can’t. And then what will happen is that community will feel slighted, your event won’t
go well, and your campaign will fall apart, and the world will just collapse into sadness.
Luckily, you can easily avoid this. There are a plethora of multi-faith and interfaith
calendars out there for your reference. We’ve included a link to our personal favorite at
the end of the video. And on that note, we’ll see you next month! Bye! Ta-ta! Toodles!
