Should We Mock Religion?

My friend Seth Andrews
of The Thinking Atheist podcast recently did a show where
he asked the question: Should we mock religion? I wanted to offer
my own answer right here: Yes. We should absolutely
mock religion. But we do want to be careful
about what exactly we’re mocking. Bad ideas of any sort
deserve to be criticized. And mockery is
a form of criticism. There are comedians like
Jon Stewart and Bill Maher who have made careers out of mocking
bad political ideas. But for some reason, a lot of people are hesitant
to make fun of religion. Now, I understand that when
it comes to, say, Islam, where mocking it could result in a
death sentence, and it has for some people. But not all religions
are like that, and even with those religions,
we treat them with kid gloves. Why is that? Maybe part of it is because we understand that
a lot of people build their lives around their religion. And if we’re mocking their faith, is pretty much
equivalent to mocking who they are as people. I understand that thinking. It’s commendable, really, that some
people think like that. That they wouldn’t want to make fun of religion, because
they don’t want to make other people feel bad. But I don’t think that alone should
immunize religion from criticism. Sure, some people may not react
very well to it, but a lot of people will. In fact, I think it provides a very useful
way to get people to rethink their beliefs. When you straight up challenge
someone’s ideas, they get defensive. They will rationalize whatever position
they hold, no matter how absurd it is. If you’ve ever seen a political interview, someone interviewing a senator or a president, you know what I mean. But if you can get people to laugh
about the ideas they already hold, that’s powerful. That will get them rethinking
those beliefs in the future. You could make the argument
that a comedian like George Carlin has done more to change more
people’s minds about religion than someone like
Richard Dawkins. Because Carlin took those ideas
that you have believed your entire life and made you realize
how illogical they were. And he got you
to laugh about it. The next time you thought about
someone looking down on you from Heaven, or the Ten Commandments, it was hard not to think
about what he said about it. Humor makes it easier
to internalize criticism. Another reason I believe
it’s okay to mock religion is because it’s an idea that people choose
for themselves and they can still change their minds about it. Religion, unlike
your race or your looks, is something you have
complete control over. So have at it. Religion’s just one long setup
waiting for a punchline. Now, I should mention
a few caveats: Not everyone
can do it well. Not everyone will
receive it the same way. And mockery is not appropriate
in every context. I’m much more likely to mock religion
when I’m speaking to a large audience, as opposed to if I’m having
a one-on-one conversation with you. I also hope, that if you’re gonna
make fun of religion, you’re making fun of a belief
that people actually hold. Because if you mock Christians
for believing, for example, that God is this bearded
white man in the sky, they’re gonna tune you out immediately,
because is not what a lot of them actually believe. Also, it’s important to think about
why you’re mocking faith. Are you doing it to put other people
down and to show they’re idiots? Or are you doing it because you want people
to understand why religion shouldn’t be the basis for public policy? I hope it’s the latter. Point being: mockery of religion
should never be off the table. It’s a very powerful tool
atheists have in our arsenal. Ridicule is a good response
for ideas that are ridiculous. My name is Hemant Mehta and I write

In other words, it is understandable why atheists don’t mock Muslims, but since Christians are not going to kill you for mocking them, why aren’t more atheists mocking Christians? Now that’s a man who stands on principles, eh? What mighty logic.

Please adjust your approach. I, a devoted and well versed atheist who is currently studying the origins of our universe at the University of Toronto Physics Department, find your attitude and approach to spreading atheism equally, if not more dogmatic to many of the devout believers I have met. Not to mention many of your arguments are fallacious, offensive, and intent merely on putting down a faith. While it is most likely false and the existence of god as most people accept him is fundamentally flawed, your tactic to promoting a belief I hold close to my identity spreads a hateful image of us and careful reflection of the message your are broadcasting would be much appreciated.

I dare you to go to Iran and mock religion. And by mocking religion, you're not raising any serious objections and you're a dishonest skeptic. Instead of actually asking honest questions and wanting the truth, you just stone-throw at theism and try to knock people down. Plz stop it.

We can only mock those certain parts of religions, where it is really something illogical or fictious. But we cannot / should not mock any religion as a whole. But yes we can also mock atheists on those certain areas where they are wrong, ignorant and illogical. The only thing which we can mock as a whole and which should be banned is, satanism. Satanism is the only thing which very harmful to the world, and I'm glad that many countries have banned satanism. In India, Saudi Arabia and Dubai, people get the death penalty for practicing satanism and doing devil worshipping.

Dear Mr. Sean, firstly satanism is not a religion. It is a ritual where people believe and worship the devil. And by doing devil worshipping, it creates a very negative environment. Therefore satanism should be banned. By practicing all Godly religions like Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Zoroastrenism, it does not create a negative environment. It rather creates a positive and a peaceful environment. Even taking about Atheism does not create a bad environment. And I respect atheists too. The 4 basic beliefs of satanists are; 1. Bring pain and blood of innocent people to impress the satan. 2. Sacrifice innocent animals, not for food, but for the sake of killing them and hurting them badly. 3. Bring fear and sorrow in everyone's heart. And 4., Take pleasure by giving as much pain, curse and suffering as possible to other innocent beings. These are their horrible beliefs! And if you expect me to respect these horrible beliefs, then you're not for real Sorry!

    1. I am educated, and it is you who needs some education.
    2. Satanism is the belief in satan, as the best ruler of the universe (which is wrong)! And satan and devil are the same thing. So the main aim of satanists is to please the satan by bringing pain, blood and suffering of innocent people and taking pleasure by giving pain to others. So I'm glad that many countries, including my country (India) have the death penalty for people who worship the satan.
    3. Here are some points for why I know creationist God doesn't exist:
If God created the universe, then why would he create satan (someone who God knew would be against him)?
If God was very merciful, then why would he send people to hell even though many people had done only good things and only lacked belief in him (God)?
God knows the future, so he knows at a certain time someone will die due to accident or in a very brutal way. So why doesn't God save them?
If God created the universe, then who created God?

Religion never creates a bad environment. Terrorism, religious punishments and sacrifices are done by most of the religious people, because they misunderstood their scriptures. And moreover, religious people only attack and kill people those who speak against their religion or criticizes their religion publicly. Otherwise religious people do amazing things like; giving charities, looking after the handicapped and the disabled people, giving free education to the poor people and providing lot of other support to the society. Whereas, satanism has NONE OF THESE. All satanists do is, kill, spill blood of others and bring pain to innocent people just for the sake of impressing their evil satan or the devil. So religion isn't ever a problem if people understand or read their scriptures properly. But satanism on the other hand is not only not beneficial, but is completely harmful for the world. Therefore many religious countries are doing the right thing by sentencing satanists to death !

Religion never creates bad people on the planet. It's about how well people understand their religions. Because religion's teachings are true. But it's followers mostly don't practice their religions 100% exactly like how their religions are. So don't blame any religion. Just blame the people, especially those who are religious extremists.

Of course we can be good without religion. I never denied that fact. And I am a Non-Religious person myself. I believe in God, but I do not follow a particular theistic religion. I only follow Facts ! And all I said was, worshiping God is alright. But worshiping the satan is not acceptable, because the main rules of satanism is itself full of violence and torture on innocent people and other living creatures. Therefore satanism is a devil religion. Not a Godly religion. And in my country India, if anyone is caught worshiping the satan or practicing satanism, they will get the death penalty. This is true !

Let me explain to you properly: There are different types of atheists. 1. There are atheists who don't believe in God, because they want to live and do everything as they like, without having fear of a higher power. And they don't mind doing bad things. So, these are the bad atheists who won't probably enter Heaven. 2. But there are other atheists who do good things and stand against bad things. And there are atheists who are more generous than religious people in giving charities to the poor. And there are atheists who spend their lives helping and serving other people and serving the society. But they only don't believe in God because they don't see any scientific evidence for God. So they don't hate God, they only don't believe in God. So these good atheists will be accepted in Heaven, and God will forgive them for not believing in him, but God will accept them in Heaven for doing "GOOD DEEDS" when they were on Earth. Hope you understood now ?

There is no contradiction. Because I know there is a God. And the best way to obey God, is to be a good person (human being) and serve other people. And also being good not only to people, but being good to animals is also very important. And that's it. And our soul will rise to Heaven when we die. So, I know God is great and Merciful. God will not punish people for not worshipping him. But God will punish people if people do bad deeds and have bad thoughts. And people who worship the devil, (satanists) and are not regretful about that, will 100% go to Hell. But atheists who are skeptical and who don't worship God or the Devil, but who do more good deeds, and who were the part of the solution, rather than being part of the problem, will also definitely go to Heaven. So there is absolutely no contradiction in what I said.

You are right. No religion is 100% true. But the Fact is, every religion has somethings that are true and somethings that are false. But, one fact which remains is that, every soul of a living being can become a God. And God exists. This is a true fact, irrespective to whether anyone believes it or not. So we have to accept this fact. So another point is, no religions are bad. All religions are good. It's only about how well the followers of those religions understand their religious scriptures. And I'm pretty sure, that people who are religious extremists, have definitely misunderstood their religious scriptures. Because every religion tells us to be peaceful and non violent. However, to see in an overall perspective, the top 2 most peaceful religions are: Jainism and Buddhism.

The idea that the universe came into being from nothing and eventually created human beings and concepts like good, evil, truth, lies, sense, math, memory, consciousness, law etc. (I could easily name 50 more things we can't understand with a microscope) is easier to criticize than the belief in God. Now particular religions might have some seemingly weird stuff in it but the idea of God itself makes perfect sense. Most arguments against the existence of God are utterly weak and usually just emotional rants about evil existing. I'm not saying we should mock Atheism, just saying don't be a fool and mock the idea of God. I didn't always have a logical understanding of God but as I got older I realized God makes far more sense than no God.

MOCKING me for being a Christian is just as discriminatory as mocking someone gay or anything that is fundamental identity to that person, but the first is anti-liberal agenda the second is very very pro-liberal agenda.

The same things go the other way around, just because you may be an atheist and I may not be one, doesn't mean you are wrong. There are many beliefs around the world. What is wrong? What is right? There is no way to the world together can decide this as everyone has different opinions and beliefs. I completely disagree with his statement on this subject. Does that mean he is wrong? NO. Notice what Jesus said to Peter AKA SIMON) FYI U HAVE TO LOOK AT IT IN ITS ORIGINAL GREEK, HEBREW &ARAMAIC, IF YOU WANT TO TEACH and rn into a MIS- understanding)) in Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon that your faith may not fail. And when you turn back, strengthen your brother.” This was Jesus warning him.  We might have expected Jesus to say, “SATAN, demanded permission to sift you like wheat, but I didn’t let him.” I wish it had said that, but that’s not what it says. Jesus "allowed" it in Peter’s life even though he loved Peter. It had to go through Jesus before Satan got permission, but Jesus did allow it. Notice also that Jesus encouraged Peter by telling him “I have prayed for you.” v.32. He believed that Peter is eventually going to be stronger from having gone through this. He says, “When you turned back” not if, but when. Jesus sees what Peter can become, not just what Peter is. Jesus sees what you can become also. He sees what is valuable after all the chaff is destroyed, also the book of Job –                Job is an interesting story.  It features a righteous man, named Job, who did everything godly and according to God's commands.  God actually bragged about Job in heaven.  Satan, in response, claimed that Job only was godly because God has blessed him.  So God granted Satan the ability to do whatever he wanted to all of Job's possessions; SATAN killed Job's cattle, sons, and inflicted him with boils.  After going through (very) intense and drawn out period of suffering, Job comes to the conclusion (after God explains to him), that all suffering has been approved by God and that God has a reason for everything.  God eventually blesses Job with twice the amount he had before.  GOD GAVE his only begotten son. You guys spout of at the mouth and you know NOTHING. God bless for I truly believe you will be touched by the truth. God never Hurt your mom, dad, you. He allowed it, so you could GROW. However you have become bitter wanting god to stop ALL the bad stuff, while you whore around and drink and drive and do drugs and hurt ppl and then it Gods fault. YOU need to own up ,man up and stop blaming your issues on God btw, you don't even believe in. He has helped me through so much because I know him. If I get attacked I know God has allowed that, but it is from your father the devil !!!!!!!!!! God bless. Peace. Think of it like this. My child is riding a bike, wanting to learn  (GOING THROUGH LIFE) and a fall is imminent,( PAIN, HEARTBREAK)  I can see that, a mile away & I know it will hurt him, but not kill him, It will just graze his knee a bit because I'm keeping a VERY close eye on his method, his style the lot!!! I allow it, He falls, he cries & I pick him up, I hug him and tell him, I love him and he should have left on the training wheels a bit longer, but he insists he be like his friends  (SOCIETY/THE WORLD, DO IT HIS "OWN" WAY") So, I think to myself okay, I will let a man called Tom show him ( Tom is a cruel man, but he doesn't mess with me as I have had him evicted from my apartment blocks, which he was a tenant and I own them, He's crazy, and thinks he can still beat me, but he never will, ( we go right back and I know him, but he thinks he knows me) I have to much power & back up, however he is evil, delusional, known for pushing boundaries in the , but many children have learned to ride wonderfully because of him. (TURNED THERE LIVES OVER TO CHRIST), So I decide to allow my  precious son to be taught by Tom. Now, Tom was once the best Bike teaching "student" EVER known to man. (THE DEVIL). I watch my son, VERY, VERY carefully, like an eagle (THE LORD/GOD) while Tom teaches him. He will learn some awesome tricks, ALOT in fact, so even though I have a beef with Tom, he knows where he stands with me & I'm the BOSS & His skill set comes in handy ( LIFE LESSONS) I mean. 🙂  What does not kill you. makes you stronger, RIGHT??. However, some Non – vigilant parents have lost their lives & sadly their Children's lives to Toms deviant, sketchy behavior, & has led many children into serious accidents and to falls that have killed them sadly or those around them, because there parents ( WARLOCKS, SHAMANS,  WITCHES -FALSE PROPHETS, LIFE COACHES, THE PRESENT WORLD SYSTEM) were not interested in their child's well being, If anything they knew nothing of there child/ren or their own lives. 🙁 Eventually after much begging from my son to learn to ride the bike without training wheels, (HUMAN EGO/PRIDE) I allow it.  I discussed it  ALL with Tom & we agree on what  he will be "ALLOWED"  to be taught, but I let Tom know, what he can NOT do:)  He Is Told by me NOT to mess up AT ALL!!!!!! If fact, he's bound and can only give instruction, not physically touch my son, on top,  I have hundreds of around the clock & 6 foot bodyguards watching to ensure the rules are enforced my son is SAFE the whole time 24/7 ( HOLY ANGELS). He's more protected than the royal, the president's children put together including every prime minister, celebrity, or president or royalty of any country on earth 100000000 times over. Like Hannibal Lector, his intelligence comes in handy, See???????  but he must be bound. In the end, Through my "allowing of it all" my son becomes an excellent bike rider and is happy, thankful to me because he knows how to ride & really, really well. He's a awesome bike rider, and has many gifts.  On top, because I LOVE MY SON so much, I give him a really expensive bike and give him full body armor, ( EPHESEANS 6:10) the body guards stay and all is well.  In the end, his riding skills are of the chain, excellent, thanks to me using Tom to my advantage, ( as he did me wrong and has to do what I say) And if anyone uses my other sons name pl scatter!!!!!!!!!! My Beloved son looks up to me. He loves his dad. Eventually, he becomes a bike riding teacher, & has sessions (GATETHERING IN GRUPS/ BELIEVERS) teaching other ppl how to ride a bike. ( PREACHING ON HOW TO GET THROUGH LIFE WITH JESUS) I Knew how to turn Toms sick twisted mind to my advantage, after all I made Tom and his mates. Now my son teaches other how to ride bikes because life is a highway ( PREACHING ON HOW TO GET THROUGH LIFE WITH JESUS) I Knew how to use TOM sickness to my advantage for the benefit of anyone who wants it )  God bless.

Some athiests are also ignorant. Just because person believes in god doesn't mean they are stupid or not intelligent. Why should science Trump experiences that have been tested and proven by people who experience it? There is no reason for atheist to be disrespectful to the religious and spiritual. I'm convinced there's a god no matter how much I try to not be convinced. My being convinced comes from everything From the supernatural things that have happened to me and my family, for example my mother once had a dream of a car crash and she warned my brother not to go, and he didn't and the car crash happened in real life exactly where and how she had dreampt it down to the smallest detail, and that dream saved my brothers life. She's also had dreams in specific detail that have saved family members life's. We've also had physical healings in our family. And other supernatural things we all can verify because we all saw it, and no we were not on drugs or anything. Also what I see of how The Bible in Paleo Hebrew agrees with science, is written on our DNA, how Bible prophecy exactly to the detail predicted the Vatican, and other empires, etc. There is also evidence that The Vatican has made up the ideas of evolution, etc, to hide people from the truth. I can go into more detail as to why I believe what I believe.

I used to argue with theists, but it just never makes a difference, so now I just mock and belittle them, because I just don't care anymore, if they wanna waste their lives go ahead, I'll be over here laughing.

We need a cost benefit analysis to justify ridicule tactics. What goes on ftmp is verbal abuse and not ridicule.

I am Catholic and agree that religions should be mocked, no one should believe something that cant be tested for plausibility. But to get to change their belief system you need convincing argument, no one takes mockers seriously if they don't have some substance to their objections.
