Porn Science: Female Sexual Response Is Contrary to Popular Belief, with Daniel Bergner

Let’s talk about a particularly provocative
set of experiments that Meredith Chivers has done. This is fascinating Canadian research
I’ve spent so much time with. So several years ago when I first got interested in her
work and I kind of stumbled into her lab. I was working on a different unrelated project
at the time. When I stumbled into her lab I found her showing an array of pornography
– so men with women, women with women, men alone, women alone, and even bonobos having
sex to self-identified straight women, gay women, straight men, gay men. And measuring
both their physical response that is vaginal or response in terms of erection for men and
then their subjective response via keypad. How turned on do I say I am. And finding something
fascinating which was that the male response was pretty predictable. The straight men actually
did mostly just get turned on to men with women or women with women. Gay men equally
predictable. The women were very unpredictable and kind of anarchic in at least their physical
response. Again there was this big dichotomy. The women
were saying I’m turned on by what I “should be turned on” by straight women, by, you
know, men with women or to a certain degree I suppose men with men and gay women by images
of women, et cetera. But their bodies were saying something completely different and
their bodies were saying they were turned on by all of it. And perhaps most strikingly
you might think those bonobos having sex would at least reach something animalistic in men.
No the men showed zero response subjectively or physically. But the women did show this
physical response to the image of bonobos having sex. So a lot of interesting things
about this, probably too many to name but one for sure is that the idea of women’s
sexuality as somehow more controlled needs to be put aside if we’re going to do any
serious searching about Eros in women. And too this idea that women are somehow less
visual, less immediate in their sexuality than men. Again you need to put that aside
if we’re going to do any serious looking at truths about women’s sexuality. Now here’s a bit of later Chivers research
that both goes along with but also pulls us in a slightly different direction than that
original set of studies. So remember part of the original set of studies shows women
being quite anarchic in what they’re drawn to. Chivers decides okay, let me take a set
of straight women, self-declared straight women and show them just four types of photographs
and see what happens. Four types of pornographic photographs. So we’ve got a flaccid – and
these are kind of disembodied genital shots just so we have nothing to distract us, not
a pretty face, not a handsome face, et cetera. So we’ve got a dangling flaccid penis. We’ve
got an erect penis. We’ve got a kind of coy soft porn female crotch shot, legs together.
And then we’ve got a legs spread more hard core shot. So the straight women do respond
to all of it physically. But that erect penis sends the plethysmograph, a measure of physical
response, soaring. And it’s just an indication again of rawness, immediacy and just a kind
of this is about sex. Let’s be careful before we complicate it with all the factors that
we eventually complicate female sexuality with. There is a core to this and we shouldn’t
be so quick to look away from it.

Why isn't the actual researcher talking about this, but someone who just "stumbled" into it? This was not insightful.

As a women, I know what physical response you are talking about, but it is not same as being turned on. It's more of a mild response to thinking about the idea of sex and has close to nothing to do with the actual stimuli (so no dick pics guys). You can't equate it with a man's erection.

Creepy. Big Think? Think not. Mystery as to why this is here with quantum physics and higher realms of thought. Regurgitated Kinsley really. BTW porn? Lets use that as a means to get to the core of female sexuality. Its a medium that degrades their common dignity and suppresses our humanity to lower forms of value. Getting a parasympathetic physical response from visual stimulus is not new research. Unsubscribing now. Im heading back to more credible science based you tube channels. See you guys there.

Women want men that make them submit to them. If I tell her to "go make me a sandwich, now!" she becomes turned on. Try it out. Works every time.

Throughout evolutionary time, if a man came at a woman with an erect penis, the woman had probably better be prepared quickly for sex, whether or not she was "emotionally" available for sex. This sexual response information, as it pertains to women, is not really a surprise to me.

so, women do know when and why they are getting exited by listening to their pussies but decide not to listen to them and instead create a different set of rules on why they think they should by or are exited about… we knew that, do they know?

Yah, I knew this. The big difference between men and women is, women still dont feel comfortable expressing their real sexual feelings. They dont want to say they like something, they are worried about how others will view them.

In my days of youth, a mere 4 years ago, (whoops forgot a 0), I was on a ski trip to Austria and everyone on the trip was between the age of 17-20. Obviously in that environment of 120 male and female hormone invested personas sex was in the air. Nothing special from my perspective except one slap in the face to an 18 year old male who went to shower in the typical Austrian hotel of the 1970s with a private but general shower and as would be typical for 100 teens everyone was hanging out in the hallway of the hotel. I had been to Osaka a year earlier and had bought a Japanese robe which I had brought with me since it was very light and perfect for travel. I came out of the shower in the robe and at one point found myself straddling the floor and for the life of me could not figure why three of the girls/women (hard to say what any of us are at that point in our lives), were intently staring at my crotch. Literally for a second I thought, "holy shit is my junk hanging out?" But then I realized these were good Canadian girls so no way because I mean seriously "women do not look at men's stuff…" I mean why?

Later on as we went out I cornered one of the women who had been behaving oddly and I blatantly said to her. "Hey what were you looking at?" She replied without a break "in that robe kneeling down I could see your penis and testicles."

WHAT! I mean come on girls don't do that do they? I mean why would they? Aren't they the good ones?

Besides why would she or the other two girls want to look when it would clearly provide them no interest.

And in that moment in Austria in 1976 did I learn that women are just as like men. At least in terms of interest. Who knows what nonsense we have that messes up anything else but that moment changed my life.

Many things changed in my life from that point but most importantly was losing the idea that women were not about sex. In fact that experience told me that they were probably more about sex and it has borne me well to keep that in mind.

Still it stays in my mind to think that these three women were looking at my genitals. Not that I care, even then I would not have cared, but just the idea that women would actually WANT to do that.

As such this study is not about porn but rather just the reality that women love and are built for sex, (I mean hey idiots! BIOLOGY), and we should not be shocked to find any studies that confirm this response.

What they are missing in the video is that woman find all these things arousing because of context. They are there to talk about their arousal. A dick pic in the terms of, how it was shown is stimulating (especially a nice one), but some dude sending you a dick pic randomly without being open to it, is not.

The study he's talking about has been thoroughly debunked, because vaginal lubrication is not an analogue to an erection.
Basically a broken assumption that renders the data totally invalid.

Dick pic fenomenon is weird to me. In my experience, women like them, just at specific times and from specific people. I mean, imagine you get a random pic of a dissembodied, meaty, dripping vagina while on a meeting with your boss, or in the waiting room at the dentist with some christian middle aged woman next to you.

I'm interested to know the results if they tested female and male groups from various post-industrial, and primitive cultures around the world. Then we could get a more complete picture of what is actually innate nature, and what is learned through environment. We could possibly even prove if homosexuality is in fact genetic, or if it's actually cultural/environmental, and humans are naturally bisexual.

The truth lies in evolution and is pretty sad. "pattern of responding in women is an evolutionary vestige which served in the past to protect women from the genital injury that can come from unwanted sex." http://digest.bps.org.uk/2011/01/biological-defence-mechanism-against.html

So now I'm confused. There was an albeit old book at my college that I checked out a while ago focusing on female sexuality. The writers of the book did their own research and, from what they say, found that women responded less to pictures of disembodied genitals than men.

So yeah, I'm confused and not sure what to believe.

In other words: the way a woman says she'll react and how she'll actually react can be very different. Even though few are liberalized, most women behave with a hive mind and are more subject to social conforming.

I can of course only speak for myself but I think most women like (consciously or subconsciously) primal qualities in a man, and this study would also suggest that.

I think it's a bit of a presupposition to call these responses as sexual desires. They don't relate to any emotions, or any kind of thought process, it's just immediate responses. They could be related to any number of things, that has no relation to any form of desire.

So basically if you want to flood the world with stupid comments one simply needs to emphasize the existence of women. Add ability to experience things and possibility of trancendental nature of human female for extra chaos.

What men need to understand is that for women, there's a disconnect between "turned on" and actually "wanting to copulate with…" All healthy, fertile women have an expansive spectrum of imagination on what can potentially give them pleasure.

So you're saying there were women that were turned on by animals that did it? My guess is that they weren't likely turned on by the animals but the animals reminded them of the act of sex itself which led them to think about an attractive partner of whom they could do the nasty with & that's what turned them on instead.

From what I understood cuz he has such a weird way to communicate the info, womans sexually react to pretty much anything but only admit that they react to penis, while mean say they react to woman x woman/man x woman and only react to that.
Also woman get excited by animal sex while men dont, but both admit they dont.

I hate how PC culture rejects science. It's now offensive to say that women have lower sex drive than men, even though it's the clear truth. If you've been living under a rock (or taking a gender studies class) and think women's visual drive is equal to men, skim this: http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/features/sex-drive-how-do-men-women-compare

So how i see it there are couple of possibilities here,
    1. it may be that women's physical response matches with their mental response so they are at least partly aware of it(every woman to a different degree) but they tell different apposed story just to adjust to the expected from them in the social norms consciously (or even unconsciously also could plays as a mental self persuasion thing even could be from an early age so they slowly starting to believe in it and now their thinking adjusts to that and it becomes a part of their personality but their physical response stays the same it affects them mentally but they blocks and suppresses it [actively or its just turned off] so it no longer fully actives the conscious mind[kind of like what could be achieved with hypnosis or placebo but deeper in the personality's conditioning].)
so according to this theory, mono-sexuality in case of women is just their inner story so the line between their true feelings and the story they are selling is very thin so their sexuality it more flexible and every woman according to her individual personalty is more able or less able to resist the physical response in case it comes to consciousness and they are effected mentally and they are attracted.( aka bi/pan sexuality.)
    2. the other option could be that women's mental response and their sexual physical response is unsynchronized and totally disconnected from each other so there is a physical response but they aren't conscious of it, they are more wired to be attracted mentally, and therefore if it's true it could be that in the case of bi or pan-sexual women the mental and sexual areas are synchronized.
so in case it is a self prevention thing just they are just more real to themselves and less afraid to block the social norms, in case it isn't they aren't even aware of it.
    3. or it could be mixture of both, straight women could be attracted physically if they put the walls off but it isn't more than sexual and with men it is, which gives it the push for them.

or i just should try turn myself gay and get away from all this mindfuck O_O
