Man Cites ‘Bush Doctrine’ After Killing Neighbors

welcome back to the program it’s great
to have you with us today here’s a really interesting defense that is being I used in a Labor Day cookout killing that took place this is how to
draw story there’s a lawyers for Florida man this week who
are actually citing George W Bush’s preemptive war in Iraq and the Bush Doctrine as a defense after
their client killed two neighbors and attempted to
kill a third one on Labor Day Florida Today reported
about this and attorneys for William Woodward filed
a motion asking for charges against him to be dropped under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law
which says gun owners as we know don’t have a duty to retreat when
they’re facing and imminent danger now the question is eminences the
subjective a lot of debate as you and i have talked about many times Lewis and
according to officials in Titusville Woodward actually snuck up on his
neighbors while they were having a Labor Day barbecue police responding to the scene found
that Gary Lee Hembree Roger picky or and Bruce Timothy had all
been shot Ambrian pick your were later pronounced
dead Blake survive the even though he I am I had been hit 11 times and in their motion woodward’s attorneys
claim that the victims had called him names and threatened to quote get him now
think about this Louis we talk about stand your ground they had called him names and threatened
to get him but in order to shoo them he had to sneak up on a different backyard that
certainly doesn’t appear to be an imminent threat to me but apparently the
law says that it could also include something that is likely to occur in the
future at least according to his attorneys here’s where it gets really weird the
court document filed by the defense cites the Bush Doctrine which is the
foreign policy principle that was used by George W Bush to justify going into Iraq %uh and
embraces preventive a preemptive war so basically
his attorneys are saying in the same way that George W Bush when into iraq preemptively our client mister woodward was right to preemptively because he had
been told that they were going to get him and they called him names sneak into someone else’s backyard and
try to kill three people successfully succeeding in killing to love them is the defense making a complete mockery
of the legal system here it seems like it I i cant think love I can’t imagine this works I mean
it seems like stand your ground could still
technically work but the Bush Doctrine that seems a little a little far-fetched we might as well
just give everybody guns and let the chaos ensue I mean if this is a
legitimate defense than I i cant even imagine what the next layer this thing
is going to be right at that a judge here is is going
to be well I should say the verdict series
definitely going to set a precedent I hope it’s one
that that is I don’t know realistic and legitimate

Yeah – the level of malice involved with the shooting is really terrifying. Even presuming what he said about his neighbors 'threatening' him and his family is true (it probably is not – an unrepentant murderer isn't exactly a reliable witness) the viciousness of this crime is pretty apparent. This guy's a cold-blooded murderer.

I wonder if fox and the republicans will race to his aid like they did Zimmerman. His lawyer will probably ask for the Zimmerman jury next.

I think you've missed the point, this is being reported on as it highlights the things inherently wrong with the "bush doctrine". (Mainly that it might conceivably apply to this situation)

It is Florida and fear is a great tool used there. Also consider how a jury can be stacked to favor an outcome.

That is possible, and if that is not possible, we have the example of the juror on the Zimmerman trial that had a book deal the weekend the case ended. her statements in later interview were rather telling of a distain for anyone that is other.

Defense attorneys can throw all sort of wacky arguments to get the best possible outcome for their clients. That doesn't mean their argument will fly. Defense attorneys work for their CLIENTS, not for seeking the true, or to ensure the well being of society.

I hope you are correct. I am a life long southerner and a true cynic when matters of law. We have a top down corruption and it is only getting worse.

Self defense isn't proactive its murder plain and simple, if someone threatens you, but are not in immediate danger go home and alert authorities or file a restraining order if you fear for your safety.

Life sentence, or dismissed on reason of insanity, where this man wouldn't get out of the psychiatric ward until his insanity has left him.

What I want to know is would he have killed his neighbors if Stand Your Ground wasn't a defense. Just more of these crazy laws the hicks in northern Florida force on the rest of us.

That would depend on if you are mowing down blacks and latinos or whites.

You are statistically far more likely to lose at trial claiming stand your ground if the victim is white.

George Bush and his lackeys used the exact same excuses to get out of being charged for treason and war crimes.
The only difference is that Bush had rich backers to get him off of murder charges and this poor fucker doesn't.

    Clever defense idea.
However: Inside the USA you have a central authority governing and enforcing how people have to behave.
On the world stage there is Anarchy. No central authority and the strongest can do what they want.

And the USA is partly to blame for that because they never acknowledged UN decisions if they don't suit their needs.

25 states have Stand Your Ground laws. The state of Florida isn't the problem but state governments being controlled by billionaires and their lobby groups like Alec to pass bad laws.

If they called you names & threaten to 'get you' a normal person think ok I'll call the police as someones made a threat on my life

But no I can clearly see how sneaking up on your neighbours with a weapon & then shooting them when Im guessing they tried to defend themselves because hes allowed to "stand his ground" is a much better option

This law is insane, its basically saying its ok to pick a fight & then shoot & kill because you are in imminent danger from a conflict YOU started, INSANITY

Stand your ground is one of the worst laws on the books. Now any yahoo can kill people and pretty much get away with it. Great job, America. Way to protect our freedom.

I seriously doubt this is a stand your ground law case here. Anyone thinking this dumbass is going to get away with this using that is retarded.

@Julio Jerez , way to bring race into everything, and the tea party. This guy might have been a liberal, you don't know. Maybe he was a liberal and the people murdered were the tea party? Either way it shows your logic, narrow minded and brainwashed.

It's not a serious defense…he is going to get convicted of 1st degree murder. Nowhere in the law does it say you can use deadly force to prevent future violence as the defense claims. There MUST be an imminent threat that leaves you no other options but the use of deadly force. This asshole had tons of options, number 1: Call the cops if your neighbor threatens your life!

Having seen any number of videos on YT showing cops going 'rogue' I can imagine this guy thinking it'd be pointless calling the cops 'cause maybe he believed he'd be ignored.
Irrespective of this possibility there is NO justification for what he did.So his neighbours allegedly threatened to 'get him'.Unsettling, intimidating, even but his extreme manner of dealing with this threat was just that,EXTREME.I can't see his 'pre-emptive action' defense will hold water.I hope it doesn't.

If he had a reasonable expectation that they were going to harm him, given that the police are useless until AFTER a crime has been committed, I totally think he has the right to take pre-emptive action. It's unreasonable that he should live in terror, or have to flee his home. Of course, the problem is proving that he didn't just invent an altercation to murder them.
