How Religion Distorts Sexuality & Sex

doctor daryl raising organizational
psychologist consultant and author of the new book sex and god which i have
here how religion distorts sexuality uh… it you know it’s fascinating
because at the end of our last interview i kind of half jokingly said the next
book should be exploring the bizarre sexual practices
of religious extremists and that’s not
that’s not primarily what this book is about but in
a way that that kind of this is not well yeah there’s a lot of stuff in
their downtown well wide range of religions experiment
express their sexuality from islam demanded christians it it’s always funny that every one of
the major religions is very concerned with sex and sexuality why is that it’s it has to do with uh… concept i first exploring in the
gardeners my first when my third book and um… it in their religions have to teach you
want to be guilty of and why the most uh… critical things one of the things that’s uh… most we’re gonna do we’re going to be saxo
effective a religion can teach you to be guilty around sex then you have to come back to that
particular religion to get forgiveness so hindi teacher went to be guilty have
been the only place in get forgiveness for sexual cn is in the hindu religion same thing for bed to see on see too
many bad this confessing to is lot moslem p moms you don’t see catholics confessing to
baptists you guys that come back to the place you
learn to get on the first place and some of the planting a seed to later
than uh… reap the rewards of those people coming back to you absolutely i called and tackled the
guilt sekolah it could forces people to come back to
the place they learned to gil and every religion has its own
particular guilt pattern and even particular sexual kilpatrick the things that org are wrong islam
maybe wrong or not wrong in christianity or
not right or wrong in in hinduism europe india a range of differences you mentioned in
the book that uh… those who were brought up with strict the religious
upbringing don’t necessarily have different about
sexual activity histories that those who are brought up without though at the
imposition of those religious values they simply fear feel more guilty about
it which is interesting because when you talk to i think many who choose any strict
religious upbringing for their children part of their expectation maybe
incorrectly is that their children will actually behave differently when it
comes to sex it doesn’t seem like it that way they just feel more guilt about
it absolutely there their cars we now have sixty or seventy
years where the research on human sexuality and there is not a nichols were two
different between eight christian and their sexual expression and a non-christian or hindu or a moslem
make all express themselves very similar ways where humans or biological creatures and we’re going
to express our sexuality in some fashion for example ninety five percent of all
americans for fifty years we’ve done that ninety
five percent of all americans have sex before marriage well i guess that means the only if you
are having sex before marriage where the catholic priests and the baptist
ministers well you know it’s certainly not true
with catholic priest yet it’s not so what’s going on and one of the key theses of the book is
that if you are religious then you have a lot of sexual life you cannot your masturbating you’re having sex
before marriage your fantasizing you’re using
pornography you just can’t tell of repeating buddy
you you you are and so you have to live a life you have
to ask if delivery cure sexually pure win there’s almost no one to could live that
life and like i said the five percent that don’t have sex before marriage who knows who they are they’re pretty
rare breed there’s another interesting part of the
book where you you talk about how in in kind of conventional wisdom focuses a
lot on the middle houston kind of district anti-woman laws that exist in many parts
of the middle east connected to often sometimes of the muslim faith but then
you point out the reality is that western religions also have a long
history of dangerous anti woman rules if you really want to look into it it’s just talked about allot lessening
tell us about some of those rules well i did you just let me correct uh… contra cynicism uh… g com commoner incident where it there is now two
trojan horse vice president inner you cut off funding for planned parenthood rifle
that’s art that’s a clear religious right
approach dual the war against women mean they’re cutting off funding that is
supporting women’s women’s health but they’re doing it because of their religious agenda around where women fit
in the family and and what kind of behavior women should and shouldn’t be
doing entered the war is women women should be under the control
of me in and there’s no doubt about that and in
the christian theology i mean you see this whole like the
quiver full movement where where women are expected to have as many
children’s possible in the under the thumb of of the uh… but the man and
things like that this is this is rampant with throughout christianity just because it
doesn’t appear to be there doesn’t mean it’s not bear the religious
right newt gingrich has three wise but yet
he’ll tell you you book at marriage you should have and you can’t you get an abortion think
the well i think they’re going is the
interesting thing is that based on panel the way people in the u_s_ have been conditioned
by media reporting there’s something that appears much more
uh… stunning and shocking about hearing that in the middle east in some
countries the woman has to walk twenty feet behind the man where there
is no brill thought of how women are being affected by the fact that
politicians control their what medical procedures they can have any it that you know that i think this is
something that much it’s much more foxworthy’s shocking about that right right and and religion puts itself is un you you cannot criticize religion into it puts itself on a pedestal you don’t look underneath the hood and
asking me why would religion want to control teenage girls in the way it’s
trying to teach control teenage girls is a lapse in its
only stuff that’s crazy i_b_m_’s that’s all it does not work
we’ve got ten years the research that shows it doesn’t two hundred fifty million dollars of
your tax dollars have daunted absence only just in the last year science-based education is being has barely on the radar screen united
states because religions want to control especially young girls sexuality you know one of things i’m really trying
to talk about in the book is what happens if you subtract religion
from human sexuality the religious what have you believe
would ogle rampant array of it you know it’s sexual scenes in star
rating people in events xm although over the place in the evidence doesn’t support that all but that’s what
religions would have us believe so why religions trying to control last
does it brings us back to their particular their particular religion delighted that most secular societies on earth they have lower birth a lower ’em uh…
abortions premarital sex lower uh… s_t_d_’s even lower divorce what
are some examples of those sweden denmark norway germany all of those countries
are much better off than us be abortions are far lower in this
country wouldn’t it be argued bill specifically with abortion and as you
know maybe some of these others they could also be argued that when you
look at the higher per capita incomes and access to any of that that that
would be one side of it but it’s also k could be a class things right yet secret it’s also related education so what we see dissecting united states
that the lowest abortions lois s_t_d_’s los teen pregnancies are in in the most secular states in united
states morocco home a texas arkansas those at high teen pregnancies hygiene s_t_d_’s high abortion rights you mean if you look why is it
cutting-edge states the zip codes that are most religious also have the most
abortions and so it because counter to what the
religious for trying to tell us no question about it no question about
it and uh… i was we had more time we’ve
been speaking with uh… doctor daryl read the book is sex and god how
religion distorts sexuality uh… really a good it’s not
like a textbook it’s it’s not dry at all it’s really an interesting read so congratulations on the book and it’s
always a pleasure to speak with you thank you david good to be on
